Monuments and murals...

It could be because we took the freeway route into Fremantle last week instead of the coast road as we usually do but as with the The Old Mill from a few posts back, this is the first time we have driven up Monument Hill to see the The Fremantle War Memorial.. very impressive it is looking out over Fremantle Harbour below. Established in 1928 to commemorate losses in World War 1 the memorial consists of the 14mt high stone masonry pillar above dedicated to 'Fallen Soldiers' and Sailors' surrounded by eight smaller memorials...

You'll have to take my word for it but the white trail between the two ships centre of the shot above was a submarine heading out to sea, if only I had actually been down at the harbour it would have been interesting to see it heading off on it's underwater travels. Too late.. the story of my life :) Looking in the other direction below in the very far distance you can see the skyscrapers of Perth city.

Not too much change to the murals by the time I went back yesterday at midday.. easy for me to say right, covering that huge space with a small roller and working at such a close perspective would have to be tres difficult oui! I can see the beginnings of a very large snake on ROA's wall. Will definitely get back there on Wednesday to see the finished murals.. Hope you've had or are still having a wonderful weekend, take care...

  1. This is an impressive monument. I'm wondering if there is a symbolic meaning embodied in the main tower and the four posts around the monument. I love that shot of the Fremantle harbor, and no, I would not have know that white trail was a submarine. Strong colors here and that blue sky is just about perfect!

And yes Grace...it snowed all last week! The icicles are proof though that it's starting to melt!!!

  11. The monument has a strong, simple dignity. We visited Anzac Hill in Alice many years ago - a similar feeling but so remote.

  13. Great idea to show the mural in progress with a soon to be followed up completed version. War memorials like the one in the first photo dot our countryside commemorating those who fought for us. They always make me feel very sad.

  15. Beautiful skies you have and I think that must become a snake on the wall there.

  20. Really nice photos! The memorial is great and so is the pano shot of the port area.

I'm catching up here and doing it in reverse order. Because of that I have to say "why did they take all that great art off of the building?"
