Blanc et bleu reflections..

Reflections of the sculpture Spanda and the Elizabeth Quay Carousel last seen on the blog here and looking experimentally different below.. it's been a while since I played :) The CDP theme for May is 'Let's Eat!', who has their shot ready for tomorrow? With one day to go.. not me! There's a skill to food shots that I haven't quite mastered yet, I may have to try one of the alternative suggestions! Hope you have a happy and safe Sunday, take care...

Wishing you were here..

I caught up with fellow Perth blogger Sami yesterday and with a few minutes to spare I had time to admire Perth based artist and designer Anne Neil's sculpture 'Here'.. j'adore the simplicity of the concept 'being here in the moment in a special place and wishing you were here'. The sculpture overlooking the fabulous beach in the coastal suburb of City Beach is indeed in a special place, and the 'wishing you were here' applies on many occasions :) We had a long lunch in Clancy's Fish Bar, super relaxed venue where you don't feel you have to eat and run :) Have a happy and safe weekend, take care...

Beach babes and blokes...

One month short of official winter the next three days are described thus, mostly sunny, sunny, more sun than clouds.. made me smile :) It was such a day yesterday and I took the opportunity to snap a few while at the beach. Surfer girl checking out the waves below and I don't know what was going on with the bloke in the last shot, he just kept running into my shots :) Happy Friday, take care and stay safe...

Nature Returns to Gosnells..

Conversation with a Gosnells local watching while I took my shots:
 She: 'Are you a tourist?'
I had to give that one a bit of consideration before replying 'No, I live on the other side of the river.. it's a super sculpture don't you think?'
Her reply 'Nah!'
Well I beg to differ :) While on our expedition to 'the other side' of the river last week we stopped in the suburb of Gosnells to take a few shots of a sculpture I'd heard about by Perth based sculptor Andrew Kay, you can see more of his fabulous works here, including two more pieces in the same suburb that I wish I'd known about before I went because it'll be a while before I go back :) Titled 'Nature Returns to Gosnells' the bronze sculpture depicts a possum holding open a manhole cover emblazoned with the City of Gosnells crest allowing 'a variety of native animals using man-made subterranean channels to access the urban environment from their homes along the banks of the Canning river'. At first I thought the leaves caught in the sculpture were a bit messy, then I thought well that's nature for you.. a bit messy :) Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..

Anzac Day.. 'Let silent contemplation be your offering'..

It's hard to believe that a year has passed since I stood here in Kings Park with Aimee, P and my sister alongside thousands of others gathered in silence to commemorate Anzac Day. A national day of remembrance to honour all Australians and New Zealanders who 'served and died in all wars, conflicts and peace-keeping operations' and 'the contribution and suffering of all those who have served'. I took these shots yesterday at dawn, opting this year to contemplate in a more solitary way. I have so many mixed emotions on this day.. sadness, anger and even a little despair as I think about the world situation today.. but when the reassuring fiery glow of the sun bursts over the horizon, for a while at least it seems as if all is well with the world! Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe...

A black tie affair..

How is it even possible, taking into account my love affair with St. Georges Terrace that I haven't been into Black Tie Co. before this! After four several hours walking in the city a stimulant of the caffeine kind was required and there he was below, beckoning me in with that sardonic smile :) I note the artist's name is Esme Putter but am unable to discover any further information..

Once inside the much needed coffee, and oh alright if you must know :) a delicious pistachio biscuit also, did not disappoint..

The Black Tie Co is housed in one of my favourite buildings on the terrace, the heritage listed Old Perth Technical School built in 1910.. and look, if you pull the shot below in a bit you can still see that 'come in if you dare' smile from the other side of the terrace. Hope you had/are still having a fab weekend, happy Monday, take care and stay safe..

Wisteria Lane..

Aimee and I did make the 'expedition' over to Myaree on the south side of the river yesterday to visit the Shabby Chic Vintage Market held at Wisteria Lane and the barn. I think I've mentioned before that a trip over to the south side of the river is a little like visiting another country and Myaree, being a predominately light industrial area we weren't sure what to expect. However once found, walking through those big shed doors was like walking through a portal into another time.

Music from the 1930/40's added to the ambience. I'm not sure what it is about the pre, during and just after the WW11 period that I find so fascinating, I can't explain it but the glorious collection of vintage 'stuff' made my heart sing! They say you either have a 'hat face' or you don't. Aimee definitely does, she has a significant collection of vintage hats. When it came to choosing between these two she chose.. can you guess :)

The rumours re the deliciousness of the  home-made scones was true, I think I may have gotten a little carried away with the cream :) Hope you are having a fab weekend, happy Sunday, take care and stay safe...

Man and his best friend..

I would rather the young man had been reading a book in this idyllic setting but what can you do right! So what are you up to this weekend? It's been such a long time since I've been to a market with Aimee and an event announcement keeps popping up on my Facebook page, the 'Shabby Chic Vintage Market'.. sounds just my Devonshire cup of tea :) If I get there I'll tell you all about it, I'll be looking out for shabby chic reflections for James's Weekend Reflections! Bon weekend, take care and stay safe...

The photographer and other Perth people..

It was good to be back in the city yesterday, the first time since arriving back from Sydney. Around noon the hunt was on for a tasty lunch and 140Thursday was the obvious choice.. can't go wrong with $5 street food from the many eateries that participate. It was a David Bowie themed event, the DJ, above right hand corner playing a fabulous mix of Bowie songs. The photographer above I've seen many times in the city, he looks like he knows what he's doing there.. I'm wondering if he's Perth's answer to the late and great New York street photographer Bill Cunningham, next time I'm going to talk to him.. so many 'next times' :) Happy Friday, take care and stay safe..

Six years short of 200..

Holy Cow! Can you believe I started Perth Daily Photo exactly six years ago today. I remember at the beginning I wasn't wholly convinced that anyone would be interested in what was going on in the worlds most isolated city. I can't believe myself just how much Perth has changed over the last six years! Taking age to a whole new level I couldn't leave Guildford without showing you just one of the many giant historic trees growing in this area. Guildford was established in 1829 and I'm guessing that this tree was here first, check out that trunk, what do you think? It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll :) Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe...P.s. I know, the title makes no sense :)

The Art(Deco) of Distraction...

A few weeks ago while in Guildford, in an attempt to take my mind off a certain gentleman that I was passionately :) attracted to, I sidetracked my attention to another great love.. heritage buildings. In historic Guildford there is no shortage, practically every building is heritage listed. The three buildings shown here built in the 1930's are described as 'inter-war' Art Deco, not too flashy but with subtle Deco touches. The Town Hall above, still used as a community space and the Council Chambers below, now a library...

The old Guildford Fire Station below built in 1934, the residence next door once the Fire Station Quarters is a 'rare surviving example of a fire station and family residence on the same site'. I'm guessing that's the old bell tower behind. I have so many unanswered questions re the old fire station, does it belong to the current residents of the house next door, is it still used. I almost knocked on the door.. almost! Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe... P.s. how fabulous does the white Art Deco look under the deep blue sky!

Trickle down..

Trickle down effect: the belief that additional wealth gained by the richest people in society will have a good economic effect on the lives of everyone because rich people will put the extra money into businesses, investments etc.. I'm sure many do while others will take it with them to the grave!

I was lucky enough to chat to Perth based visual artist Hosae while he was painting the mural here back during Public2015. Hosae, whose work 'explores the conflict between uncontrollable natural forces and the imagined permanence of human order' was working under an overly blue, extra hot sky.. way too hot for such a complicated, huge endeavour, but he was on an artistic mission, and although I didn't hang around that day to see the finished mural I did go back..

... albeit two years later :) to see the finished mural below, an astoundingly complex piece of work that has unfortunately also been victim to the tagging scourge that seems prevalent around Perth these days! Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe..

Curiouser and curiouser!

Passing through the suburb of Herdsman a few days ago P mentioned a curious sculpture he had spotted sitting on an island in the middle of Herdsman Lake. We were too close to let a 'peculiar' photo opp slip by :) He wasn't wrong! I couldn't get close enough to see if there was an inscription but Google was a fund of information. I'm sure you will be as astounded as moi when you read where it was originally!

Created by Italian born Pietro Porcelli, the central figure in the group the goddess of Peace and Plenty, the male figure of Labour sits to her left, while the figures of the wife and child sit on her right. If you scroll down here you will see the sculpture in its original pristine condition and if you check out the site history here (interesting story) you will see how the sculpture, once sitting proudly atop the old AMP building, demolished in the 70's, sits now rather forlornly here in the middle of the lake..

But even more curious.. did you notice? Even though the lake is a freshwater lake there was not one bird to be seen! Birds twittering in the surrounding trees but not a one on the water.. believe me when I say that is odd, most water areas in Perth are alive with take-offs and landings of the feathered kind.. curious much! Happy Monday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. I have the day all to myself today, time to catch up!
Visit James to see more Weekend Reflections from around the world..

Home again.. Happy Easter!

Yay! Home safe and sound :) Once again the theory that it's safer to fly than it is to drive on the roads has been proven correct, I fervently wish it could be both but the human factor negates this possibility! We had a brilliant time with our Sydney famille, my grandchildren continue to blossom and flourish and although there is nowhere like home, it gets so much harder each time we have to leave them. My first post back is traditionally a view of my favourite bridge from a different angle, seen here from the ferry on the way to the Taronga Zoo one day before my granddaughter's third birthday..

Although well traveled for her young years, the Sydney Harbour bridge is my granddaughter's favourite bridge also, just one of the many things appreciated together. The fresh sea breeze blowing through one's hair is an exhilarating experience, made even more hilarious when shared by an adoring aunty :) I hope you have been happy and well, I'm very much looking forward to seeing what you've been up to while I've been away. Here's wishing you a happy but most of all safe Easter from Perth.. P.s. so far not one piece of chocolate has passed my lips, can I keep it up today, the day of le grand family picnic.. we'll see! How about you.. has it been a chocolate fest :)

The same but different.. à bientôt.

It's the same spot as my header shot but I was surprised to see when last in the city in the evening that the artwork had changed, now a couple of galahs that I'm sure you will recognise :) I like the idea that this perspective to the city could become an outdoor canvas for Perth artists, couldn't see a name on this one unfortunately.. will be watching this space!

Sydney here I come.. hopefully :) I'm kidding! The rational part of my brain says 'Grace, breathe it's all good', the stronger irrational part says 'eeeeeeek!' Are there any other white-knuckle fliers out there that understand what I mean? Take care and keep safe until I catch up with you next Thursday. Happy Wednesday and à bientôt ..

Things I wasn't tempted to buy..

I read somewhere that the average life-span of an Aztec warrior was 37 years.. unless of course you purchase an immortal warrior as seen here on the antique strip in Guildford. I'm finding it a little difficult to imagine exactly where this larger than life ancient warrior would comfortably reside :)

I definitely wasn't tempted by the 'pull my finger' chef below.. although he would without doubt have generated much indelicate  conversation :)  Only two more sleeps until I head over to Sydney to celebrate my granddaughter's third birthday.. an annual event that I both look forward to and dread at the same time.. thankfully the joy of seeing my Sydney famille vastly outweighs the fear of flying! Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe...
